Most employers expect much more than a degree from the university/college graduates they hope to hire. Research from the Education Advisory Board and The Conference Board of Canada has found that employers generally agree that new workplace entrants have a deficiency in the soft (i.e., transferable) skills needed to perform successfully and to progress in the world of work. Mount Royal University (MRU) Recreation created a student staff development framework and is already experiencing many benefits for the department, the professional staff, Recreation Centre customers and, of course, for the student staff. In addition to learning more about the benefits, the presenter will explain the competency-based framework, how we developed it, how we have begun to implement it and the challenges we’ve had to mitigate.
