Description: The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an experiential workshop that explores the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Since the release of the TRC, as well as the University of Calgary’s Indigenous strategy we have seen a marked increase in interest to engage in this type of learning and experience when it comes to building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities. The Blanket Exercise has become a very popular tool for addressing this need. Our two hour session will include an opening sharing circle where participants will be encouraged to introduce themselves and share their interest, followed by the experiential component of the workshop where participants embody the Indigenous peoples of Canada as we tell the history of colonialism, oppression (including residential schools, 60s scoop, and MMIWG) in Canada. We will conclude with a sharing circle, where participants will have the opportunity to speak to their experiences going through the exercise. This final sharing circle can be cathartic for participants as they look to unpack their own experiences and their own relationship to the story that’s been told.
